BROOKGATE SUBMITS PLANNING APPLICATION FOR NEW CYCLE PARK FOR CAMBRIDGE
CB1 Cycle Park will be largest in the UK
Cambridge, January 2013 - Brookgate, the Cambridge-based mixed-use development company, has revealed plans for the biggest cycle park in the UK, providing around 3,000 new cycle parking spaces for the city.
Designed by Oxford Architects and Formation Architects, it will feature both Sheffield stands and double stackers cycle racks, and is part of a new transport interchange, one of the key benefits being delivered as part of Brookgate’s CB1 master plan.
The cycle parking facility will be operated by the train company Greater Anglia under their Cycle Point brand. There will additionally be a cycle shop with sales and repair facilities and a bike hire facility.
The planning application will also include an adjoining 230-bedroom hotel for the international Hotel group Accor which will be located above the cycle park, together with new retail or restaurant units fronting onto station square.
Sven Töpel, Chief Executive of Brookgate, said:
“We have been working closely with the council and Greater Anglia to come up with a scheme that addresses the substantial demand for more cycle parking spaces at Cambridge station. A new station square and transport interchange are important benefits of the CB1 development, and achieving planning permission for the cycle park will be a significant step towards the delivery of our plans to create a new transport hub for the city centre.”
Geraint Hughes, Partnerships Manager for Greater Anglia said:
"Providing high quality facilities at stations is a key part of our Cycling Strategy. Cycle Point will bring together all the facilities that the cyclist needs within a safe and secure environment. We look forward to working with Brookgate, the local authorities and cycle users to ensure that the facility meets the needs of Cambridge cyclists. "
Designs for the project were welcomed by cycling campaigners when they were presented to members of the Cambridge Cycling Campaign as part of the stakeholder engagement process on 4 December.
A spokesperson for Cambridge Cycling Campaign said:
"We've been pleased to work with Brookgate, and hope that we've helped to solve many of the issues that concern those with bikes. We believe that they've been able to produce a design for the station cycle park unrivalled anywhere in the UK. Cambridge, as the premier City for Cycling in the UK has long deserved a station cycle park of high quality.”
