The landscape design for CB1 has been carefully developed to create a number of significant open spaces and routes through the site.
The spaces will operate on a variety of scales, from dramatic civic spaces, like Station Square, to parks, smaller squares, courtyards and gardens.
The landscape design will infuse each of these spaces with a distinct character and richness of detail, but will use a common design language and palette of materials to create a strong overall sense of place. The spaces are designed to relate to the surrounding architecture, microclimate, pedestrian and vehicular activity, and will be robust yet flexible.
Station Road will continue to form the main connection between the station and the city centre. It will be lined with newly planted trees to create a linear park and, at the east end of Station Road, will open up into the dramatic new Station Square. To the south of the site, the CB1 park will form the main public green space for recreation and relaxation.
A smaller park to the north, situated behind the new Ibis hotel will not only serve as a space for quiet relaxation for local residents but also as an outdoor area for local residents and visitors. This space can also be used for events, exhibitions and performances.
